Tracy Diina Communications and Read To Succeed Buffalo Join Read Across America in Celebrating Dr. Seuss's Birthday March 2, 2011.

The National Education’s (NEA) Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. The project was launched in 1997 after a small reading task force at NEA came up with a big idea. "Let's create a day to celebrate reading," the group decided. "We hold pep rallies to get kids excited about football. Why don't we do something to get kids excited about reading? We'll call it NEA's Read Across America' and we'll celebrate it on Dr. Seuss's birthday." And so was born on March 2, 1998, the largest celebration of reading this country has ever seen.

As Buffalo’s premier early literacy initiative, Read to Succeed Buffalo will join Read Across America at 110 sites throughout Western New York, reading to over 10,100 children. For the first time ever, Buffalo is on the National Education Association map as a host site of “Read Across America.” Readers of all ages are encouraged to celebrate!

Most children who have problems learning to read come from low-income families. In the City of Buffalo, this means that many of our children are vulnerable. Reading problems put these children at high risk for school failure, dropping out, low literacy and chronic unemployment in adulthood, and consequently, for perpetuating the cycle of poverty and low literacy in the next generation. Research shows that children who start behind in school tend to stay behind leading to high dropout rates and often a lifetime of struggle. The mission of Read to Succeed is to help prepare children for a successful start in school and to improve student achievement in Buffalo through early literacy.

Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers. Children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school. RTSB focuses on preparing children for school by helping to improve their language and literacy skills from birth through age 5. The organization, which is made up of a collaboration of nearly 50 organizations also working in literacy in some way, focuses primarily on literacy for infants to age five.
